  • EA Austin Forecasting Workshop

    Sunday, December 11th | 2 PM - 5 PM | Location: Private Residence
    1. RSVP on Partiful to get the address (private residence), or email info@eaaustin.org.
    2. Bring your laptop. This workshop is hands-on!

Come join EA Austin for our December Forecasting Workshop and learn how to forecast like a pro! This event will provide you with the skills and knowledge you need to make accurate predictions on the questions you care about.

You'll be guided through the fundamentals of forecasting by Will, who has won multiple forecasting tournaments and consistently finishes in the top 3% of participants. He'll be teaching you everything you need to know from Philip Tetlock's book “Superforecasting: The Art and Science of Prediction," as well as how to operationalize questions, score forecasts, and measure your progress.

After a brief introduction, you'll have the opportunity to practice forecasting with others on a shared set of questions using INFER and Metaculus. You'll learn how to write rationales and practice reasoning transparency, ensuring that you're making the most accurate predictions possible.

Once you've had the chance to practice your new skills, you'll regroup to share your lessons learned and any remaining questions you have about forecasting. You'll also have the opportunity to make your own forecasts on questions you're interested in, including prediction market questions on Manifold Markets. If you're interested in making your own questions, Will is happy to help you operationalize them.

The workshop will conclude at 5:00pm, but if there's enough interest, we may provide dinner and continue the event for those who wish to stay longer. Let us know if you're interested or we can play it by ear! Don't miss out on this amazing opportunity to learn how to forecast like a pro – register now!

  • EA Austin “Using Money Better” Workshop

Time TBD! Possibly: Saturday, January 28th | 4 PM - 7 PM | Location: Private Residence
DM Ivy or email info@eaaustin.org to let us know when you’d like this event to take place!.

    Virtual meeting link: https://meet.google.com/xec-fuha-xpt

    --------------------------------

Some of you don’t invest your money.

Some of you need to better estimate the $/hour value of your time.

Some of you don’t know about donation matching or bunching or lotteries.

Some of you are neglecting the risk of value drift.

Some of you need a budget.

Some of you are thinking about buying a house.

Some of you don’t get cashback on your spending.

Some of you need help deciding how much to give.

Some of you are giving to merely-very-good nonprofits.

Some of you have specific questions about how to use your money better.

All of you can learn something really important about how you can use money better.

Or if you’re an expert already then you can help significantly improve how another EA uses their money, and thereby do a lot of good.

    --------------------------------

Bring your laptop -- If you want to take notes, do research, or consult my list of Using Money Better - Resources/Links during the workshop.

My ambitious goal is for this workshop to be one of the most valuable events EA Austin has ever put on. Bring your money questions and openness to learn about how to use your money better!

  • EA Austin Weekly: Casual Social Meetup

Thursday, December 8th | 7:30-10:30 PM | Location: The Buzz Mill
There is no official reading or discussion topic to start this week's meetup. Instead, it will be just casual socializing about anything EA-related from beginning to end.

If you want something to read anyway, I suggest picking an item from Forecasting Fundamentals - Resources/Links to learn about and coming to EA Austin's Forecasting Workshop this Sunday!

Parking: Do not park at Dairy Queen; they tow. Parking at The Buzz Mill sometimes fills up, in which case we suggest parking in the large Walgreens parking lot across the street.

Food: There are two food trucks at The Buzz Mill (one is vegan).

  • Clearer Thinking Activity: EA Austin Weekly Meetup

    Thursday, December 1st | 7:30 - 10:30 PM | Location: The Buzz Mill
This is EA Austin's weekly, welcome-to-all event! We’ll spend the first hour doing a short activity from Clearer Thinking’s List of Tools and Mini-Courses, and then put our heads together to share results and what we learned.

Does one activity/tool stand out? You can vote on the activity in the EA Austin Slack. If you’re not on the our Slack yet, you can gain access to it by filling out our Member Intake Survey.

As usual, the latter part of the evening will be free-chat with other local altruists. We usually switch the tone around 8:30.

Parking: The Buzz Mill has parking in its front and back, but if it fills up you can park at the Walgreens nearby. (Note that the Dairy Queen tows!)

Food: There are two food trucks at The Buzz Mill, and one is vegan. Something for everyone.
